July - December 2003

Ancient Future - Australian Arts Festival Japan 2003, is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia International Cultural Council, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts.

From July to December this year, Japan will enjoy a special taste of Australian culture. "Ancient Future - Australian Arts Festival 2003" will showcase Australia's diverse artistic life over a six month period through a range of events supported by the Australian government.

Australia is a land of old and new, where elements of heritage and tradition extending back 40,000 years both stand alone and fuse with our contemporary culture and "young" history. This exciting blend of ancient and cutting edge expression is what makes Australia the dynamic and innovative society that it is today.

Our rich and unique culture is reflected and expressed by the diverse body of works created by Australia's many inspired artists. Ancient Future features an array of events showcasing visual arts, music, performing arts, film and design.

"Ancient Future - Australian Arts Festival 2003" was launched as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2003 on 20 July in Niigata Prefecture. The Tokyo Main Program runs through to December, featuring film, theatre, photography, music and cutting edge contemporary art.
